Painting with Words. The Role of Description in Tolstoy\u2019s Poetics<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Abstract<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In connection with the three portraits of Anna Karenina, the present study seeks to answer the question, what is the role of ekphrasis in Tolstoy&#8217;s poetics? Can Wittgenstein&#8217;s antinomy be resolved: \u201fwhat can be shown cannot be said\u201d. Can a verbal text create a visual illusion and turn the reader into a spectator? Can one genre shed light on a work of art belonging to the realm of another genre? Moreover, are there any poetic devices suitable for the description of paintings? Tolstoy draws characters and objects so vividly and offers them to the readers\u2019 sight in such a manner as to turn descriptions into mental images or virtual paintings.
